Download and install Cubby, if necessary.
-
Download and install AlwaysUp, if necessary.
-
Start AlwaysUp.
-
Select Application > Add to open the Add Application window:
-
On the General tab:
-
In the Application field, enter the full path to the Cubby executable, cubby.exe.
If you installed Cubby in the default location, this is:
C:\Users\<USER-NAME>\AppData\Roaming\cubby\cubby.exe
where <USER-NAME> is the name of the Windows account where you installed Cubby.
-
In the Arguments field, enter -hidden. This will prevent Cubby from showing its main window when it starts - you won't be able to see it if you're not logged on anyway.
-
In the Name field, enter the name that you will call the application in AlwaysUp.
We have stuck with the default of Cubby but you can specify virtually anything you like.
-
Click over to the Logon tab and enter the user name and password of the account where you installed Cubby.
This is necessary for Cubby to find its settings.
-
Click over to the Startup tab and check the Ensure that the Windows Networking components have started box.
This informs AlwaysUp that Cubby needs TCP/IP networking support to do its work.
-
Click the Save >> button. In a couple of seconds, an application called Cubby will show up in the AlwaysUp window.
It is not yet running though.
-
Before we start Cubby as a service with AlwaysUp, let's make sure that Cubby is not configured to start when you log on.
-
Start Cubby if it is not already running. Right-click on the Cubby tray icon
()
and select Settings to bring up the Cubby settings window.
-
If the box marked start Cubby automatically when you start your computer is checked, please un-check it now. (Note that this setting is misleading - it would only start Cubby when you log on, not when your computer starts!)
Click OK to record the change.
-
If Cubby is running, stop it now by right-clicking on the tray icon
()
and choosing Exit.
-
To start Cubby from AlwaysUp, choose Application > Start "Cubby":
-
Now that Cubby is running in the background as a Windows Service, you may not see its tray icon when you log on. If you need to configure Cubby:
- Stop Cubby from AlwaysUp (via the Application menu).
- Start Cubby from its shortcut on your desktop.
- Double-click on Cubby's tray icon and make your changes.
- Exit Cubby.
- Start Cubby from AlwaysUp. Cubby will now use the settings you saved.
-
That's it! Next time your computer boots, Cubby will start up immediately, before anyone logs on.
We encourage you to edit Cubby in AlwaysUp and check out the many other settings that may be appropriate for your environment.
